Katniss Everdeen’s lamb stew with dried plums and wild rice

The past years we have presented two recipes taken from famous books Hunger Games: the pumpkin brew and roasted quails with tangerines. Today at the release of the last chapter of the saga, we could not let slip the opportunity to present the favorite dish of Katniss! The lamb stew with dried plums and wild rice.lamb stew with dried plums katniss everdeen

“The stew’s made with tender chucks of lamb and dried plums today. Perfect on a bed of wild rice. I’ve shoveled about halfway through the mould when I realize no one’s talking.”

The description of the dish is only hinted by Katniss, who was so taken by its taste to totally forget about everyone speaking next to her. With this description we had total liberty for preparing the stew. The cooking was inspired by a dish of Aosta Valley: the rabbit with dried plums; here the meat is sauted and then let slowly cook together with the fruits so that it becomes tender and soak in all the flavour. Because of the wealth of the Capitol, the dish could not be so simple. Inspired by the Middle East tagines we added a pinch of spices: fresh turmeric, mace and black pepper, and honey that sweetens the meat and mitigates its strong flavor.

Now that you know also the genesis of the dish, you just have to try the lamb stew and dried plums 🙂 ! In the meantime we are going to see the movie 😉 .

“So, Katniss, the Capitol must be quite a change from District Twelve. What’s impressed you most since you arrived here?” asks Caesar.
“The lamb stew”, I get out.
Caesar laughs, and vaguely I realize some of the audience has joined in.
“The one with dried plums?” asks Caesar. I nod. “Oh, I east it in bucketful”.
